Are lithium ion batteries safe9/24/2023 ![]() There are several ways to shut off the battery. If the electronics detect any of the above are outside the cell specified range then it will shut-off the battery. Typically, during discharge, it should be within −20C to 60C and within 0C to 40C when charging. Cells needs be operated within a given range. Temperature: This is the temperature on the cells.Overvoltage is one of the most dangerous things you can do to the cell. Going outside that range especially at the high end can cause a thermal issue. Lithium-ion cells have a range of voltage that it needs to stay within. ![]() Voltage: This is the voltage on the individual cells. ![]() Some cells have high rated charge current capability to enable fast charging. All cells are rated to a specific charge current that it can handle. Charge current: This is the current entering the battery to charge the battery. Some cells can be rated as high as 100C (100 times the rated capacity) while some cells can only handle less than 1C. All cells are rated to a specific discharge current that it can handle. Discharge current: This is the current leaving the battery to power up a load. This includes the following things are being monitored to ensure it is within normal operating conditions: ![]() The most important element of the battery management system is to ensure that the lithium-ion cells are being used properly. Figure 1 Typical battery management systemįigure 1 shows a typical battery management system (BMS) commonly used in a lithium-ion battery. ![]()
